Treatment of periodontal pocket
The first line in the treatment of periodontal pocket is cleaning and roots smoothening (Scaling and root planing). This step is done by periodontist. After scaling, the patient is given 4-6 weeks for healing.


   

After this healing period, periodontal examination is performed and treatment plan is made accordingly.

There are many ways to treat deep periodontal pockets that do not respond to scaling:

Local antibiotic delivery inside the pocket  
Removal of gingival tissue that causes the pocket  
Surgery for exposure and cleaning of the root
 
Bone graft to replace resorbed bone.
 
Extraction of teeth (as last choice if we cannot maintain it by any of the previous procedures)
 

Selection of treatment technique depends on:

The depth of periodontal pocket  
Its number  
Its distribution in the jaw
  
Type and severity of bone resorption related to these pockets
 
Presence of teeth mobility
 
Severity of the mobility if any
 
Skills and knowledge of the treating doctor
