Causes of gingival recession

Gingival enlargement happens due to its reaction to bacterial plaque. The enlargement increases in case of hormonal disturbance which happen during puberty and pregnancy. Enlargement may be localized to some teeth or may be generalized.

There are many causes for gingival recession. Knowing the cause of recession is very important to eliminate them before treatment and prevent recurrence. Gingival recession may be due to:

Using hard toothbrush
Using too much pressure during brushing
Incorrect way of using toothbrush
Teeth crowding
Gingival and periodontal diseases
Thin gingival tissue
Bad habits (pen biting, smokeless tobacco…..)

Teeth crowding may cause gingival recession especially if the tooth goes outside the bone

Gingival and periodontal diseases may cause gingival recession

3 2 1

The gingiva in picture 1 is from thin tissue biotype and is more prone to recession than the gingiva in picture 2 (medium) or 3 (thick)

Severe recession due to teeth rotation, thin gingiva and poor oral hygiene previously .
