Free gingival graft

(Superficial graft from the palate)

In this surgery, the graft is superficial tissue harvested from the palate and sutured to the area that has the recession. This technique is used in case of thin gingival tissue and in areas where esthetics is not important, because the color of the healed graft is lighter than adjacent tissue. The success rate of this surgery is 99% if done properly. After surgery, a dressing should be placed on the palate for 2 to 5 days to protect it during healing.

For best results in severe recession, it is better to do this technique in two steps, as follows:

Severe recession in lower central incisor

After the free gingival graft from the palate

Before   After the second
surgery (Moving the tissue
up to cover recession)
